The Safety / Fire Marshal in a club and nightlife venue is responsible for protecting guests, staff, contractors, and the business by preventing hazards, responding quickly to incidents, and ensuring the venue meets all fire, health, safety, and emergency requirements. In a high-energy environment where capacity, lighting, music, alcohol service, and crowd movement can increase risk, this role is essential to keeping operations safe, compliant, and well controlled.

This position typically sits within the operations and security structure of the venue and works closely with management, front-of-house teams, security, engineering, and cleaning teams. The Safety / Fire Marshal usually reports to the General Manager, Operations Manager, or Venue Manager, depending on the organisational setup. During service, the role may also coordinate directly with the Duty Manager or Head of Security when incidents, evacuations, or risk concerns arise.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring the venue for fire risks, trip hazards, overcrowding, blocked exits, unsafe equipment, and other safety concerns.
  • Ensuring fire doors, exits, extinguishers, alarms, signage, and emergency lighting are present, accessible, and in working order.
  • Supporting crowd safety by observing guest flow, identifying bottlenecks, and escalating concerns before they become incidents.
  • Assisting with emergency response, including evacuation procedures, incident containment, first response coordination, and communication with emergency services if required.
  • Conducting safety checks before, during, and after service, and recording any issues, corrective actions, and incident reports accurately.
  • Supporting staff training and awareness so team members understand emergency procedures, reporting lines, and safe working practices.
  • Helping maintain compliance with local fire codes, licensing conditions, and venue safety standards.

The ideal person for this role is calm under pressure, observant, disciplined, and confident in communicating with both staff and guests. They are proactive rather than reactive, able to spot risks early and act decisively. Strong integrity, attention to detail, good judgement, and the ability to remain composed in busy, noisy, and fast-changing environments are essential for success.
