A Security Guard / Bouncer / Doorman in a club, lounge, or nightlife venue is responsible for protecting guests, staff, and the business while supporting a safe, controlled, and welcoming atmosphere. This role is often the first and last point of contact for guests, so it plays a major part in shaping the venue’s reputation, energy, and overall guest experience. In a busy nightlife environment, the doorman must balance firmness with professionalism, ensuring that standards are maintained without disrupting the atmosphere of the venue.

  • Position in the organisation:

This role sits within the front-of-house and security function of the venue. It usually reports to the Security Manager, Head of Security, Venue Manager, or General Manager, depending on the size and structure of the operation. The role works closely with the host team, bar staff, floor managers, and senior management to maintain smooth guest flow and respond quickly to incidents.

  • Key responsibilities:
  • Monitor entry and exit points and control guest access according to venue policies, capacity limits, age restrictions, dress code, and guest list procedures.
  • Check identification, verify tickets or reservations where required, and manage queues in a calm and orderly manner.
  • Observe guest behaviour inside and outside the venue, identify risks early, and de-escalate conflicts before they escalate.
  • Remove or refuse entry to guests when necessary, using tact, confidence, and professionalism.
  • Respond to disturbances, intoxication, theft, vandalism, or emergencies, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Support crowd control, protect staff, and coordinate with management or emergency services when needed.
  • Maintain incident logs, report concerns accurately, and follow all legal, safety, and licensing requirements.
  • What makes someone successful in the role:

The best people in this role are calm under pressure, alert, physically capable, and highly professional. They communicate clearly, read people well, and can enforce rules without creating unnecessary conflict. A successful Security Guard / Bouncer / Doorman has strong judgment, good emotional control, a polished appearance, and the confidence to manage difficult situations while still representing the venue in a positive way.
