Mystery Shopper / Auditor plays a vital quality-assurance role within Consulting, Concept & Opening teams, providing an objective view of the guest experience, operational standards, and brand consistency across restaurants, clubs, and lounges. This position is used to test readiness before launch, monitor standards after opening, and identify gaps that may affect service, sales, compliance, or guest satisfaction.

Within the organisation, the Mystery Shopper / Auditor typically sits under the Consulting, Concept & Opening function and works closely with operations, training, marketing, and senior management. In most cases, the role reports to the Operations Director, Project Manager, or Opening Consultant, depending on the structure of the venue group or project team. The role may also support franchise, multi-site, or third-party audit programmes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Visiting venues anonymously or semi-anonymously to assess the full guest journey, from first impression to departure.
  • Reviewing service standards, product knowledge, cleanliness, speed of service, ambience, upselling, and staff engagement.
  • Checking compliance with brand standards, SOPs, licensing requirements, safety procedures, and opening checklists.
  • Evaluating the performance of key touchpoints such as reception, table service, bar service, VIP handling, and payment process.
  • Recording findings accurately and objectively through structured scorecards, reports, photos, and written feedback.
  • Highlighting strengths, gaps, and immediate corrective actions, with clear recommendations for improvement.
  • Supporting pre-opening audits, soft-opening reviews, training validation, and post-opening performance monitoring.

The ideal candidate is highly observant, discreet, disciplined, and fair-minded, with a strong understanding of hospitality operations and guest expectations. They must communicate clearly, notice small details others may miss, and remain professional while delivering honest feedback. Success in this role requires excellent judgement, integrity, consistency, and the ability to translate observations into practical improvements that help elevate the guest experience and protect brand standards.
