The Pre-opening Manager is responsible for turning a hospitality concept into a fully operational venue ready for launch. This role sits within the consulting, concept and opening phase of the business, acting as the central coordinator between ownership, consultants, design teams, suppliers and the future operating team. It ensures that all opening activities are delivered on time, to brand standards, and within budget, while aligning every detail of the venue with the intended guest experience.
Typically, the Pre-opening Manager reports to the General Manager, Project Director, Managing Director, or directly to ownership, depending on the structure of the business. During the project phase, they may also work closely with architects, contractors, brand consultants and department heads who will later lead the live operation.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Building and managing the opening plan, timeline and critical path from project handover to launch
- Coordinating cross-functional input across operations, design, procurement, IT, finance, HR, marketing and training
- Supporting recruitment, onboarding and training preparation for the opening team
- Working with suppliers and contractors to ensure all equipment, systems, uniforms, menus, stock and signage are ready for trade
- Helping define operational standards, service sequences, opening procedures and guest journey details
- Tracking budgets, deadlines, deliverables and risks, and escalating issues early
- Supporting pre-opening marketing, soft opening planning and final readiness checks
- Ensuring compliance with legal, licensing, safety and operational requirements before launch
The person who succeeds in this role is highly organised, commercially aware and calm under pressure. They combine strong project management skills with hospitality experience and understand how to translate a concept into practical daily operation. They communicate clearly, manage competing priorities well, and build strong relationships across different teams and stakeholders. Above all, they are detail-driven, solution-focused and able to maintain momentum through the complexity and pace of a venue opening.
