A Refrigeration Technician is responsible for keeping all cold storage and temperature-controlled equipment operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with food safety standards. In a restaurant, club, or lounge environment, this role is critical to protecting product quality, preventing spoilage, and supporting uninterrupted service by ensuring refrigeration systems perform reliably at all times.

Position Overview

This role sits within the Facilities & Maintenance function and typically reports to the Facilities Manager, Chief Engineer, or Maintenance Manager, depending on the size and structure of the operation. The Refrigeration Technician works closely with kitchen teams, procurement, stewarding, and operations leadership to respond quickly to equipment issues and reduce downtime that could affect service or inventory.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair refrigeration and cooling equipment, including walk-in coolers, freezers, undercounter units, ice machines, display cases, and HVAC-related components where applicable.
  • Perform preventive maintenance checks to ensure consistent temperatures, system efficiency, and compliance with health, safety, and food storage requirements.
  • Diagnose faults, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and carry out timely repairs to minimize disruption to daily operations.
  • Monitor refrigerant levels, compressor performance, thermostats, valves, fans, and controls, and escalate complex issues when specialist support is required.
  • Keep accurate service records, maintenance logs, and equipment histories to support planning, compliance, and budgeting.
  • Work safely with tools, refrigerants, electrical systems, and confined spaces while following company procedures and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate with operations teams to schedule work with minimal impact on guest service and peak trading periods.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Is technically skilled, detail-oriented, and calm under pressure.
  • Has strong diagnostic ability and a practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Understands the importance of speed, discretion, and service continuity in a high-pressure hospitality environment.
  • Takes pride in preventative maintenance, safety, and maintaining high standards of reliability.
