The Barback (Service Support) plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in keeping the bar and front-of-house service running smoothly. In a busy restaurant, club, or lounge environment, this position supports bartenders and the wider service team by maintaining stock, cleanliness, and readiness so guests receive fast, polished, and consistent service.

  • Purpose of the role:

The Barback ensures the bar is fully prepared and continuously replenished during service. This includes stocking ice, glassware, garnishes, soft drinks, liquor, and service items; clearing used items; washing and polishing equipment; and helping maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace. The role helps bartenders stay focused on guest engagement and drink preparation by reducing delays and preventing service interruptions.

  • Position in the organisation:

Barbacks sit within the Front of House (Dining Service) team and are part of the bar operations function. They work closely with bartenders, servers, and floor managers to support smooth service flow. The role typically reports to the Bar Manager, Beverage Manager, Restaurant Manager, or Assistant Manager, depending on the venue’s structure.

  • Key responsibilities:
  • Restock bar stations, coolers, and storage areas throughout service
  • Collect and clean glassware, trays, and bar tools
  • Prepare basic service items such as garnishes, napkins, straws, and ice
  • Monitor inventory levels and alert the bar team to shortages
  • Assist with opening, closing, and reset procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and compliance with hygiene and safety standards
  • Support bartenders during peak periods and special events
  • Who succeeds in the role:

Strong Barbacks are energetic, dependable, and highly observant. They work well under pressure, anticipate needs before being asked, and move quickly without sacrificing quality or safety. The best candidates have a strong work ethic, excellent teamwork skills, a service mindset, and the ability to stay organized in fast-paced environments. A willingness to learn and a positive attitude are essential for success and growth in hospitality.
