The Assistant General Manager supports the General Manager in leading the day-to-day operation of the restaurant, club or lounge, ensuring the business runs smoothly, profitably and consistently to brand standards. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines floor presence, team management and operational control, making it essential to both guest satisfaction and overall business performance.

  • Position in the organisation:

The Assistant General Manager sits directly below the General Manager in the management structure and acts as a key second-in-command. They typically report to the General Manager and may also liaise with owners, area managers or senior operations leaders depending on the size and structure of the venue.

  • Core responsibilities:

This role helps oversee all aspects of service delivery, including opening and closing procedures, shift planning, team coordination, guest experience, cash control, stock oversight and compliance with health, safety and licensing requirements. The Assistant General Manager also supports recruitment, onboarding, training and performance management, while helping to maintain service standards, resolve guest concerns and drive sales through effective floor leadership and team motivation.

  • Operational and financial support:

A strong Assistant General Manager monitors labour, controls costs, reduces waste and supports targets for revenue, average spend and profitability. They help analyse daily performance, identify service gaps and implement practical improvements that enhance efficiency and consistency.

  • Leadership profile:

Success in this role requires a calm, confident and highly organised leader who can balance attention to detail with a commercial mindset. The ideal person is approachable, decisive and resilient, with excellent communication skills and the ability to lead by example during busy service periods. They must be comfortable coaching others, handling pressure and building strong relationships with both guests and team members.

  • Why it matters:

In a high-volume restaurant, club or lounge, the Assistant General Manager is often the operational anchor who keeps standards high, the team aligned and the guest experience on track.
