The General Manager (GM) is the senior operational leader responsible for the overall performance, standards, and guest experience of the restaurant, club, or lounge. This role translates ownership and brand expectations into daily execution, ensuring the venue operates efficiently, profitably, and consistently at a high standard.
Position Overview
The GM sits at the top of the venue management structure and acts as the central point of accountability for all departments, including front-of-house, bar, kitchen, security, events, finance, and maintenance. In most operations, the GM reports directly to the owner, managing director, or area/regional manager, depending on the size and structure of the business. They are responsible for aligning the team, systems, and guest experience with the venue’s commercial goals and brand identity.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the overall day-to-day operation of the venue, ensuring smooth service, strong teamwork, and consistent standards.
- Drive revenue, control costs, and support profitability through smart budgeting, forecasting, and labour management.
- Recruit, coach, develop, and retain high-performing teams across all departments.
- Maintain exceptional guest satisfaction by setting service standards and resolving issues quickly and professionally.
- Oversee compliance with licensing, health and safety, hygiene, fire, employment, and security requirements.
- Monitor performance through sales reports, labour metrics, guest feedback, and operational KPIs.
- Work closely with chefs, bar managers, supervisors, and support teams to deliver seamless service and strong commercial results.
- Lead opening, closing, scheduling, vendor relations, stock control, and venue presentation.
What Success Looks Like
The best General Managers are confident, calm, and highly organised leaders who can balance people, service, and numbers. They communicate clearly, solve problems quickly, and lead by example. Strong commercial awareness, emotional intelligence, resilience, and attention to detail are essential. Successful GMs stay visible on the floor, inspire accountability, and create a culture where the team performs at its best and guests want to return.
