The Barback is the operational backbone of the Bar & Beverage team, ensuring bartenders can deliver fast, consistent, and high-quality service in a busy restaurant, club, or lounge environment. This role supports the smooth running of the bar by keeping supplies stocked, stations clean, and service areas prepared throughout service.

  • Purpose of the role:

The Barback exists to support bartenders and help maintain a high standard of service during peak periods. By anticipating needs, replenishing stock, clearing glassware, and handling essential setup and breakdown tasks, the Barback helps the bar operate efficiently, safely, and without interruption.

  • Position in the organisation and reporting line:

The Barback is part of the Bar & Beverage team and works closely with bartenders, bar supervisors, and the wider front-of-house team. The role typically reports directly to the Bartender in Charge, Bar Supervisor, or Bar Manager, depending on the venue’s structure.

  • Key areas of responsibility:
  • Restocking liquor, beer, wine, mixers, garnishes, ice, glassware, and other bar supplies
  • Clearing used glasses, bussing bar areas, and keeping service stations clean and organised
  • Assisting with bar setup before service and breakdown after service
  • Supporting inventory rotation, stock counts, and replenishment procedures
  • Monitoring bar cleanliness, equipment readiness, and presentation standards
  • Responding quickly to bartender requests to maintain service speed and flow
  • Assisting with basic prep tasks such as cutting garnishes, filling ice wells, and polishing glassware
  • Type of person who succeeds in the role:

A successful Barback is energetic, reliable, physically resilient, and highly observant. They work well under pressure, communicate clearly, and take pride in being proactive and detail-oriented. The best Barbacks are team players who stay calm in busy environments, move quickly without sacrificing standards, and understand that strong support behind the bar is essential to great guest service.
