The Compliance Officer in HR, Training & Compliance plays a critical role in protecting the business, its people, and its guests. In a restaurant, club, or lounge environment, this position ensures that operations meet legal, regulatory, licensing, safety, and internal policy requirements while supporting a culture of accountability and professionalism. The role helps reduce risk, maintain standards, and keep the venue operating smoothly and responsibly.
Position Overview
This role sits within the HR, Training & Compliance function and works closely with operations, management, security, and department heads. The Compliance Officer typically reports to the HR Manager, Training Manager, or Head of HR/People & Culture, depending on the structure of the business. While not always a line management role, it has wide influence across the venue and is central to maintaining consistent standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Monitoring compliance with labour laws, licensing conditions, health and safety requirements, food hygiene standards, and venue policies.
- Supporting the development, rollout, and review of SOPs, checklists, training records, and compliance audits.
- Tracking staff certifications, mandatory training, permits, and renewals to ensure all team members remain work-ready and legally compliant.
- Conducting internal inspections, documenting issues, following up on corrective actions, and escalating serious risks where needed.
- Assisting with incident reporting, investigation support, and maintaining accurate compliance documentation and records.
- Working with managers to embed compliance into daily operations, onboarding, refresher training, and performance management.
- Helping prepare the venue for external inspections, authority visits, or licensing reviews.
The ideal person:
- Is highly organised, detail-oriented, and calm under pressure.
- Has strong knowledge of hospitality compliance, risk management, and workplace standards.
- Communicates clearly and confidently with both frontline teams and senior management.
- Is practical and solution-focused, able to balance compliance requirements with operational realities.
- Demonstrates integrity, discretion, and consistency in handling sensitive information and enforcing standards.
A successful Compliance Officer is proactive, thorough, and collaborative — someone who helps the venue stay compliant without slowing down service or damaging the guest experience.
