The Line Cook is a core member of the Kitchen (Back of House) team, responsible for preparing, cooking, and plating menu items to the restaurant’s standards during service. This role helps ensure that every dish is executed consistently, efficiently, and safely, supporting a smooth flow of service and a high-quality guest experience. Line Cooks work in a fast-paced, highly coordinated environment where timing, accuracy, cleanliness, and communication are essential.

  • Place in the organisation:

The Line Cook reports to the Sous Chef or Chef de Partie, and ultimately to the Head Chef or Executive Chef depending on the operation’s structure. They work closely with other kitchen stations, the expeditor, and front-of-house teams to keep service moving and maintain standards.

  • Key responsibilities:
  • Prepare ingredients and set up the station before service, ensuring all items are stocked, labelled, and ready for use.
  • Cook dishes according to recipes, portion standards, and presentation guidelines.
  • Maintain speed and consistency during busy service periods while managing ticket flow effectively.
  • Follow food safety, sanitation, and hygiene procedures at all times.
  • Communicate clearly with teammates about stock levels, menu changes, special requests, and service issues.
  • Keep the workstation clean, organised, and properly maintained throughout the shift.
  • Support prep work, closing tasks, and end-of-shift cleaning as required.
  • Who succeeds in the role:

A successful Line Cook is disciplined, dependable, and calm under pressure. They have strong attention to detail, good knife and cooking skills, and the ability to work quickly without sacrificing quality. They are team-oriented, take direction well, and understand that consistency and pride in execution are essential to kitchen success. In a premium restaurant, club, or lounge setting, the best Line Cooks combine technical ability with professionalism, resilience, and a strong work ethic.
