A Receiving / Delivery Clerk plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in keeping a restaurant, club or lounge supplied, organised, and ready for service. This position ensures that all incoming goods are received accurately, checked against orders, and delivered to the correct storage or production areas in a timely manner. By maintaining tight control over deliveries and stock intake, the Receiving / Delivery Clerk helps protect inventory, support cost control, and reduce disruptions to service.
This role sits within the Support & Logistics function and is typically part of the broader back-of-house operation. It works closely with purchasing, storeroom, kitchen, bar, and finance teams to ensure goods flow smoothly from vendors into the venue. The Receiving / Delivery Clerk usually reports to the Storekeeper, Purchasing Manager, Inventory Controller, or Back-of-House Manager, depending on the size and structure of the operation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Receiving all deliveries and verifying quantities, quality, freshness, and condition against purchase orders and delivery notes
- Inspecting goods for damage, shortages, or substitutions and escalating discrepancies immediately
- Recording received items accurately in the appropriate system, log, or receiving documentation
- Labeling, sorting, and routing products to the correct storage areas, such as dry store, chilled store, freezer, kitchen, or bar
- Coordinating with suppliers and internal departments to resolve delivery issues and follow up on missing or incorrect items
- Maintaining cleanliness, order, and food-safety standards in the receiving area
- Supporting stock rotation, date checks, and secure handling of high-value or sensitive items
- Assisting with basic documentation for returns, credits, and proof of delivery
The ideal person for this role is detail-oriented, reliable, and calm under pressure. They should have strong organisational skills, good numeracy, and the discipline to follow receiving procedures exactly. A successful Receiving / Delivery Clerk communicates clearly, handles goods carefully, and understands the importance of accuracy, accountability, and timing in a fast-paced hospitality environment.
