Position Overview

The Waste Management Officer plays a vital operational role within the Facilities & Maintenance function, ensuring that all waste generated across the restaurant, club, or lounge is collected, sorted, stored, and removed in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner. This position supports cleanliness, hygiene, sustainability, and regulatory compliance, helping the venue maintain a professional environment for guests and staff while reducing environmental impact and operational risk.

Typically based within the Facilities & Maintenance team, the Waste Management Officer reports to the Facilities Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, or Operations Manager, depending on the size and structure of the venue. The role works closely with housekeeping, stewarding, kitchen teams, security, and external waste contractors to keep waste processes running smoothly and discreetly during service hours and after close.

Key responsibilities usually include:

  • Monitoring and managing all waste streams, including general waste, recyclable materials, food waste, glass, cardboard, and hazardous or special waste where applicable.
  • Ensuring waste is correctly separated, labelled, stored, and removed in line with venue procedures, local regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Keeping waste collection areas clean, organised, pest-free, and safe for staff access.
  • Coordinating with internal departments to prevent overflow, contamination, odours, and unnecessary waste build-up.
  • Liaising with waste contractors and tracking collection schedules, missed pickups, and service issues.
  • Supporting recycling and sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction targets and reporting.
  • Identifying health, safety, and hygiene risks linked to waste handling and escalating concerns promptly.

The ideal person for this role is practical, reliable, and highly organised, with a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail. They should be comfortable working behind the scenes, often in a fast-paced environment, and able to follow procedures consistently. A successful Waste Management Officer is proactive, physically capable, and cooperative, with good communication skills and a commitment to cleanliness, compliance, and operational excellence.
